To search for an inmate, you can call 828-733-2071. This number is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and you can make inquiries about any inmate.

Sending a Mail/Care Package

Start by reviewing the Inmate Mail Guide, as a lot of basics on sending mail and packages are included in the FAQs there.

Inmates at the Avery County Jail can receive letters, post cards, and small photographs that are not sexual in nature. You can also arrange to have soft cover books and magazines delivered to inmates directly from the publisher. Correspondence should be sent to:

All personal mail is subject to inspection and will likely be read before being delivered to inmates.

Sending Money

You can send money in the mail or online. Make any cashier’s checks or money orders payable to the inmate. The inmate’s account will be credited. While you can send cash, it is not recommended. Do not send money in denominations greater than $100 per day.

Inmates place orders at the Avery County Jail commissary weekly. Deposit money in an inmate’s account by Monday evening if they need to use it that week.

You can also upload money online. Inmates can use this money in their commissary accounts or to make phone calls.

Phone calls

Inmates at the Avery County Jail can use a prepaid calling card to make outgoing calls or they can make collect calls at the expense of the recipient. These calls are monitored unless the call is to the inmate’s attorney. Phone calls with attorneys are free and unmonitored.

Visitation

Video visitation is encouraged, and is considered helpful to the mental state of inmates. To set up a visit, set up an account . This will allow you to either set up a visit or deposit money to an inmate. A video visit of 30 minutes will cost $9.90. The inmate can pay this from his account or the visitor can pay this fee during the visitation. Inmates at the Avery County Jail are not restricted on the number of video visits they can have in a week.
